Better RSS Widget

Posted by & filed under .

The Better RSS Widget grew out of a need to have all links in the RSS feed open in a new window, a feature sorely lacking in the core code of WordPress. This plugin adds a new widget allowing you to set default options for the widgets, and the ability to override each option when adding an RSS feed to the sidebar.

Great plugin but each time a new update rolls out it deletes my existing Better RSS widgets. I use Better RSS in 20 locations on my site so it takes a bit of time to get them added again.

That is definitely an interesting problem and this should not happen. I know that it does not do that for me so I am at a loss to figure this out. I will do some more testing, but rest assured it should not delete your old widgets.

Love this widget! Just installed tonight and still playing with it – but very easy to use! One question: is there any way to format the display of the feed items so that there is a line space between items? It would make it a lot easier to read if you could!

    thanks!

Thank you for the comments. Right now there is no way within the widget itself to do what you want to do. However, it should not be very difficult to do using CSS. You might want to head over to the support forum and ask there. Make sure to post a link to your site in the forum post so someone can try to provide you with some sample CSS to try. I will try to help as well.

Thank you for the fast response! I will do that in the am – about done for the day right now – it’s been a long one! Glad that I found you – you do great work!

    Nice Widget GrandSlambert – thanks!
Is there a way I can add a “read more >” after the excerpt that links to the same url as the the article title? Essentially duplicating the title after the excerpt and controlling what it says.

    Great widget GrandSlamber, thanks.

Just one question, will you upload the documentation again?

Our WP Blog has been in operation since 2006 running on a IIs Server and we have been using Better RSS Widget problem-free for at least a year.

However, after recent upgrading to WP 3.3.2, Better RSS Widget 2.5 appears to have compatibility issues when activated:

    1. The most recent post displayed on our home page disappears.
    2. NextGen Photo Gallery rotating images on home page disappears and shows “[gallery not found]“.
    3. SimplePress Forum shows “MySQL server has gone” plus reams of code.
    4. Huge (exponential) text file is written to php_error log.

De-activating Better RSS Widget 2.5 resolves these issues.

Better RSS Widget is a great plugin when functioning and we hope to continue to be able to use it.

Is this a settings issue, or a bug?
    Is there a fix available?

    Thanks!

This seems more like a bug than anything else. At this time I cannot see how this plugin could b e causing the issues you are describing. I have not worked on this plugin for quite some time as it seems to have been working well. I will be taking a look at this later in the week to try and resolve this problem.

        Hello GrandSlamBert,

        Couple of anomalies when testing:

        1. Some but not all betterrss widgets are returned when ONLY “Home” is ticked in settings.
        2. All widgets are returned when BOTH “Home” AND “Front Page” options are ticked.

Also, our Home/Front page has NextGen Gallery & NextGen Flash plugins at the top. These become inoperative whenever BetterRss Widget is activated.

Could an incompatibility between NextGen Gallery and BetterRSS Widget have arisen with the latest WP upgrade?

Thanks again for looking into this.

    Hello GrandslamBert,

FYI, we recently migrated our website to a new hosting space, but activating Better RSS Widget presents the same problem described earlier.

    Thanks again.
